ABOUT BRIAN

Brian Patrick Duggan, M.A., is the author of General Custer, Libbie Custer and Their Dogs: A Passion for Hounds from the Civil War to Little Bighorn and the award-winning Saluki: The Desert Hound and the English Travelers Who Brought It to the West – the result of over 14 years of research in archives, museums, and libraries in three countries.

 

The editor for McFarland Publishers’ Dogs in Our World series, Brian is a retired university technology educator with 33 years experience in the University of California and California State University systems.

 

A canine historian, he has published numerous articles that have been published internationally and in AKC Family Dog, AKC Gazette, Dogs in Review, Sighthound Review, Show Sight, Saluki International, American Saluki Association Newsletter, Classic Saluki, The Private Journey, and Greasy Grass: The Journal of the Custer Battlefield Historical & Museum Association.

Together with his wife, Wendy (also an AKC judge), they have had Salukis for forty years under the Kyzyl Kum prefix with 81 owned and/or bred, 35 show champions, and several grand champions to their credit. He and Wendy were honored with the American Saluki Association’s Top Breeder Award for 1994.

During his university special event support days, Brian has had the pleasure of setting microphones for astronaut Kathy Sullivan, astronomer Carl Sagan, author Tom Wolf, and the amazing Dr. Stephen Hawking.

McFarland’s Dogs in Our World – a scholarly series devoted to the exploration of the unique relationship between dogs and humankind in history, society and culture.

Submitting Proposals for the Series

McFarland seeks proposals for book-length works to be submitted to series editor Brian Patrick Duggan. A wide range of topics are welcome, including historical breed profiles, studies on contemporary issues (such as dogs in the military), the use of dogs in therapeutic capacities, and the roles of dogs in everyday life.
